All About Subwoofers

Why You Should Discuss Subwoofer Sizes before Purchasing

There are many factors to have in mind when you are choosing a subwoofer. You will have to consider the power, sensitivity, frequency response, impedance, configurations, where you will put the subwoofer and so much more. But when all of these factors are right, the choice of your subwoofer can just be reduced to the size. Size is a very important consideration to have in mind.

How Subwoofer Size Affects Performance

Subwoofers are available as 8”, 10”, 12”, 15”, 18” and 20”. Most people think that the bigger the size the better the performance but that is not the case. When buying a subwoofer it might be best to consider getting an average size. Big subwoofers are more about boom without any sound quality.

These subwoofers come with big coils and drivers which require more amplifier current and magnetic energy to power and control the movement. This is why they tend to lag behind the music. Theoretically speaking, the bigger the subwoofer, the better it would perform according to the law of physics.

However, there are many engineering challenges for big subwoofers that make it impossible for the law of physics to apply as ideally imagined which is why a bigger subwoofer is not always better.  However, you need to determine your needs and the kind of sound you want before choosing a subwoofer so you can get the right one.

Common Subwoofer Sizes

There are three common subwoofer sizes for you to choose from. These are 8 inch, 12 inch subwoofer and 15 inch subwoofer. If you are getting a car subwoofer, an 8 inch subwoofer is a good consideration because it doesn’t take up much space so you will not have to give up boot space to have great sound. These subwoofers also fit directly where stock speakers were making upgrade very easy.

The 12 inch subwoofer is the most common subwoofer because it provides great sound for all types of music. It also has very good responsiveness, sensitivity and low bass extension. They have just the right deepness and loudness for any setting whether you want to use them at home or in your car.

The 15 inch subwoofer is massive and requires a lot more free space for it to work great. This is suitable when you want monstrous sound and vibrations. If you are looking to please people with sound in your car then fit one of these in your trunk and you will definitely turn heads. They are great for RnB, rap and hip hop music that comes with a lot of bass. The 15 inch subwoofers also require a lot of power to run them.

There is a wide variety of subwoofers available in the market in different sizes and different performance. When choosing a subwoofer be sure to check all the specifications to ensure that its performance will be right for you. You should consider the other speakers that you will be pairing with the subwoofer too for a great sound experience.
