FEDERAL officials who visited Guam this week said the Department of Defense is targeting a more realistic population growth of 41,000 by 2014, but the final environmental impact statement still pegs the growth at 79,178 by 2014.

Many in the local community heaved a sigh of relief when federal officials announced a significantly less figure, but the actual figure written in the final impact report revealed the inconsistency.

Approved supplemental budget includes $50M for PAG

THE Port of Guam is one step away from receiving $50 million for upgrades needed for the military buildup.

The U.S. House of Representatives on Tuesday passed the final version of the 2010 supplemental appropriations act by a vote of 308 "yes" and 108 "no." The bill now goes to President Barack Obama for signature.

GOVERNOR Felix P. Camacho is considering withdrawing the $88 million loan approved by the U.S. Department of Agriculture for the landfill project in Layon, according to the governor’s legal counsel Shannon Taitano-Lujan.

Lujan said there were concerns brought up during the negotiations on how the government of Guam would be able to pay for the loan.

Sanchez: EPA has ‘unrealistic expectations’

SIMON Sanchez, chairman of the Consolidated Commission on Utilities, said the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s expectations from the Guam Waterworks Authority are "disingenuous" and "unrealistic."

Sanchez was reacting to EPA’s latest filing in federal court, which expressed doubt over GWA’s ability to meet its obligations under the stipulated order and to comply with key components of the Clean Water Act and Safe Drinking Water Act.
